Eastern Spadefoot (Scaphiopus holbrookii)

 

Size:

Adult Eastern Spadefoots range in size from 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 inches long.

Description:

Adult Eastern Spadefoots are usually brownish gray (but can be nearly black), with two lighter yellowish lines in an hourglass shape on the relatively smooth skin of the back. The pupil of the eye is vertical, and there is a sickle-shaped, black spade on the bottom of each hind foot.

Range:

Throughout the Atlantic-Gulf Coastal Plain from Massachusetts to Louisiana (except South-Central Florida), and ranges northward in the Mississippi River watershed as far as southern Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri.

Breeding Season:

March to August in the North, anytime in the South (depending on rains)

Call:
