Florida is home to a great diversity of native snake species, only six of which are venomous. Your chances of being bitten by a venomous snake are quite low. Most people who are bitten are trying to handle, harass, or kill the snake, often because they aren't sure if it is dangerous. To avoid being bitten, you should learn to identify Florida's venomous snakes, and adopt a "leave them be" attitude. Dr. Steve Johnson, Assistant Professor of Urban Wildlife Ecology at the University of Florida / IFAS Plant City Campus has developed an educational CD/DVD set that will teach you everything to know about venomous snake identification and safety, and will prepare you to deal with snakebite emergencies.
