Gray Treefrogs
(Hyla chrysoscelis and Hyla versicolor)
Size:
Adult Gray Treefrogs range in size from 1 to 2 inches long.
Description:
There are two species of Gray Treefrogs, which can only be told apart by their call -- physically they are identical!
Range:
Eastern US, except peninsular Florida (In FL, only found north of Marion County).
Breeding Season:
March to August
Call:
A fast, high pitched trill. To hear the Gray Treefrog's call, visit the USGS Frog Call Lookup.
Identification:
Rough, warty skin highly variable in color, ranging from whitish to gray, green or brown, with a yellow 'wash' of color on the hidden parts of the hind legs. Gray Treefrogs have a white spot under the eye above the upper 'lip' -- a key identifying characteristic.
Gray Treefrogs could possibly be mistaken for the invasive Cuban Treefrog.
But -
- Gray Treefrogs are smaller -- usually no more than two inches long
- The skin on the head of adult Cuban Treefrogs is fused to the skull
