Venomous Snakes of the Southeast
Poster
Dr. Steve Johnson of the University of Florida / IFAS Plant City Campus, has recently produced an educational poster entitled “Venomous Snakes of the Southeast”, which is available in both English and Spanish. This poster uses a combination of watercolor illustrations, line drawings, maps, and text to decribe the six venomous snake species and their look-alikes, where you might find them, and how to recognize a venomous snake. The poster also gives tips for responding to snakebite emergencies -- what you should and should NOT do in case of venomous snakebite.

CD/DVD Set
We have also collaborated with the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Knowledge Network to produce an educational video geared predominantly toward teaching educators about venomous snake safety and equipping them to pass this information on to others. Finally, we have produced a number of educational “fact sheets” on snake identification and safety in schoolyards and residential areas, available through the University of Florida’s Electronic Data Information Source (EDIS) at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/TOPIC_A23708620
Bring Venomous Snakes of the Southeast to your library by requesting these materials and hosting your own "Snake Week"
We are offering free copies of the poster and free CD/DVD sets (free educational documents on CD, and the FKN program on DVD) to libraries throughout the southeastern US, available upon request. This year, we have not designated a specific date for "Snake Week". Ideally, each library or library system will designate their own "snake week", during which librarians will display these posters along with our educational documens and various books about snakes for readers of all ages, in both English and Spanish (when appropriate). In addition, the DVD and PowerPoint presentations can be used for special programs. This use of these materials would not only meet our goal of conservation through education, but would also address our mutual goal of stimulating interest in these reading materials.
