Southern Cricket Frog (Acris gryllus)
Size:
Adult Southern Cricket Frogs range in size from 5/8 to 1 1/4 inches long.
Description:
Adult Southern Cricket Frogs are usually brownish or greenish, with bright yellow, green, orange, red, or black markings on the back. There is a dark triangular mark between the eyes, and the markings on the back often form a "Y" shape. These tiny frogs can best be identified by their call (see below), or by the lengthwise stripes on the hidden rear surface of the thigh.
Range:
Coastal Southeastern US (Virginia to Louisiana), and in the Mississippi River watershed as far north as extreme southwestern Tennessee
Breeding Season:
February to October (depending on rains)
