Treefrogs

Squirrel Treefrog

(Hyla squirella)

Size:

Adult Squirrel Treefrogs are small -- from 1 to 1.5 inches long.

Description:

Squirrel Treefrogs can be tan, green, gray, or brown, and may have splotches. They often have a yellowish upper lip (mustache), and some can have whitish stripes down each side, although the stripes aren't as boldly marked as those of Green Treefrogs.  Most biologists identify these frogs by process of elimination -- checking for the more obvious characteristics of each of the other treefrogs to be sure what kind of frog it ISN'T.

Range:

Coastal Southeastern US (Virginia to Texas)

Breeding Season:

March to October (April to August in the North)

Call:

A short, raspy trill, somewhat like the scolding of a squirrel. To hear the Squirrel Treefrog's call, visit the USGS Frog Call Lookup.
